Abstract

One of the most important steps of tunnel mechanized excavation is the selection of tunnel path. In this study, the selecting reasons of Karaj–Tehran water conveyance tunnel path is investigated. In the first step, the geomechanical properties of two suggested paths including the direct and indirect paths are perused and the active faults in each path such as Pourkan - Verdij is recognized. In the second step, the probability of squeezing in mentioned paths is studied using of several methods such as Singh, Jetwa, Goel and Hoek and Marinous methods and at the end, the length of broken zone  in each path is estimated. The result shows that the probability of squeezing and the length of broken zone in the indirect path are lower than the direct path (approximately 42.69% and 100m) and finally the indirect path is selected as the optimized path to excavate of this tunnel.
