Abstract

The aim of this research is the application of numerical methods in investigating the behavior of Msjed Soleyman hydroelectric cavern. With this regard continuum numerical methods such as finite element (Phase2 software) and finite difference (FLAC Software) methods were used. The discontinum distinct element method (UDEC code) was also utilized for comparison with the other two methods. The stability analysis was then carried out using UDEC software. In this study, Msjed Soleyman hydroelectric cavern  were modeled by applying a support system. The results from different numerical methods were then compared with instrumentation readings. The results show that UDEC models in comparison with the other two methods is closer to real ground conditions. With respect to displacements gained around caverns, it can be said that the ground behaves as a pseudo continuum media. However the presence of weak siltstone (specially in the cavern’s roof) created joints with low strength, which causes local instabilities. The UDEC models confirm this finding.
