Abstract

This study investigates the impact of variable water discharge resulting from mining activities at the Angouran Mine in Zanjan Province, Iran, on key environmental indicators, including water quality, soil health, and biodiversity, with a focus on sensitive ecosystems. Discharge variability, primarily influenced by climatic factors and human activities, can significantly affect environmental sustainability. In this research, regression models were employed to simulate the relationships between discharge rates and water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and heavy metal concentrations. Additionally, correlation analysis was conducted to assess the potential effects of discharge fluctuations on aquatic habitats and vulnerable species. The results indicate that increased discharge reduces heavy metal concentrations and improves water quality, while reduced discharge leads to pollutant accumulation and biodiversity loss. In contrast to previous studies, this research integrates time-series analysis with environmental indicators to model the direct impact of discharge variability on water quality and biodiversity in one of Iran’s most critical mining ecosystems. By offering practical strategies for sustainable water resource management in mining operations, this study provides valuable insights into the environmental consequences of mining activities. Previous studies have seldom focused on long-term discharge data and its statistical relationship with biodiversity. This study fills this gap by employing regression and correlation methods over a 7-year dataset. The aim of this research is to conduct an analytical evaluation of the impacts of variable water discharge caused by mining activities at the Angouran mine in Zanjan on environmental indicators. By investigating the relationship between variable discharge and environmental changes in this sensitive area, the study seeks to deepen the understanding of the challenges and consequences of these variations and propose strategies to mitigate their adverse effects on local ecosystems.
