Abstract

The present study deals with a set of experiments to evaluate the accuracy of Masliyah model on predicting overflow cut size of vertical current hydraulic classifiers. Effects of washing rate, particle size distribution, solid content, pulp retention time, and classifier dimensions were studied through a 2-level full factorial experimental design using a bench scale device. The model relative error was considered as prediction response. Results showed that modeling error increased with the increase of particle size. The effect of washing rate was found to be negative but insignificant. For classifier with smaller dimensions, a drop-off was observed in error by decreasing solid content and increasing retention time. Contrary results were observed in the case of larger unit. The other main and interactive effects were insignificant. Mean relative error was calculated ±28.02 and ±27.81 percentages for large and small classifiers, respectively.
