Evaluating the Effectiveness of Aggregate Irradiation on Bitumen–Aggregate Stripping Resistance Using Experimental and Statistical Analysis

چکیده

Moisture-induced bitumen–aggregate stripping is one of the primary factors responsible for the deterioration of asphalt pavements. This study examines the potential of aggregate irradiation as a method for improving bitumen–aggregate adhesion and reducing moisture-induced stripping. The research aimed to investigate the possibility of enhancing the stripping resistance of three commonly used aggregate–bitumen combinations employed in regional road pavements through the irradiation of aggregate surfaces with different types and doses of radiation prior to mixing with bitumen. Two aggregate sources, obtained from quarries locally known as Ubhan Shah and Margallah, were combined with ARL 60/70 penetration grade bitumen (PG 58-22/AC-20). Laboratory tests conducted on both irradiated and untreated aggregates demonstrated that irradiation improves interfacial bonding and significantly reduces stripping susceptibility. The evaluation was carried out using static water immersion, rolling bottle, and bitumen bond strength tests, which effectively assessed the stripping potential of the aggregate–bitumen combinations. The results indicate that carbonaceous aggregate sources exhibit greater resistance to stripping than siliceous aggregate sources. Furthermore, aggregate surface pre-treatment through irradiation using X-rays, electron beams, gamma rays, and neutrons proved to be an effective approach for enhancing the stripping resistance of various aggregate–bitumen combinations. The full factorial design analysis identified aggregate source, aggregate condition, and rolling bottle test duration as significant independent variables affecting the percentage loss of bitumen during the rolling bottle test. These findings suggest that aggregate irradiation is a promising technique for improving the durability, moisture resistance, and long-term performance of asphalt mixtures.
