Effective management and planning of truck fleets in open-pit mines is crucial because transportation costs constitute a significant portion of operational expenses and directly affect overall operational efficiency. Choices and strategies concerning fleet allocation are influenced by the selected objective function and the constraints embedded within mathematical models, which can result in considerable economic and operational outcomes for mining activities. In this research, to examine in greater depth the economic impacts of selecting the objective function in modeling, two integer programming models are created for truck fleet allocation. The first model intends to reduce overall operational costs such as fuel, maintenance, labor, component wear, and other related expenses, whereas the second model concentrates exclusively on reducing fuel consumption expenses as the primary economic factor. To assess the suggested method and analyze potential differences, both models were developed and evaluated using actual and reliable operational data from the Sungun copper mine. The numerical findings indicate that both models convey almost identical quantities of high-grade and low-grade ore to the processing plant, with only minor variations that do not significantly affect ore delivery. However, the greatest difference is noted in waste transportation; the volume of waste moved in the second model is roughly 42 percent greater than that in the first model. This notable difference suggests that concentrating only on fuel expenses may inadvertently raise the total volume of waste transported, causing shifts away from production and financial objectives. In comparison, the comprehensive cost model offers a more equitable allocation and aligns better with the mine’s operational goals by presenting a broader, more integrated, and more balanced perspective on cost distribution and operational efficiency.
