Predicting the intensity of the buildings vulnerability due to tunneling induced settlement by studying the geomechanical behavior of the surrounding medium
The main challenge in urban tunneling is dealing with settlement and its destructive effects on adjacent buildings, which can have unfavorable significant financial and social consequences. The geotechnical parameters of alluvial environments have a significant effect on soil displacements and movement, and consequently ground settlement. Therefore, studying the correlation between geotechnical parameters and the behavior of the surrounding medium can provide useful insights for predicting the intensity of damage to buildings. In this paper, the influence of geotechnical parameters in the east-west section of Tehran Metro Line 7 tunnel on tunneling induced settlement and its subsequent effects on the intensity of damage to nearby buildings was investigated. The damage severity of buildings was assessed based on deformation parameters of the buildings. The results show that the damage severity of buildings is significantly affected by variations in the soil's elastic modulus, and slight changes in the elastic modulus lead to change in the severity building damage from severe structural damage (classes 4 and 5 damage) to non-structural damage (classes 0 and 1 damage). Changes in the internal friction angle have a minimal effect on deformation parameters of the buildings and do not significantly alter the intensity of building damage. Furthermore, the increase in soil cohesion has a greater impact on the intensity of building damage compared to the internal friction angle but less than the soil's elastic modulus. This can reduce the category of building damage from relatively severe damage to moderate damage.
